Basic Training Course

Included in the Design department (as it was then called), the Basic Studies Program  starts when the school first opens its doors in the second semester of 1972/73, and consists of a two-semester introduction to the training in Design initially proposed by Ar.Co. In 1972/73 the course subjects are “2 Dimensions” (Eduardo Trigo de Sousa, Manuel Costa Cabral), “3 Dimensions” (Waldemar d’Orey, Graça Costa Cabral), “Graphic Comunication” (Luis Filipe Oliveira), “Aesthetics” (Salette Tavares), “Critical History of Art” (José Luis Porfírio) and “Color Theory” (Eduardo Nery). In the first semester of 1973/74 the program remains very similar, changing in the second semester: course subjects are “Structures” (Manuel and Graça Costa Cabral), “Expression and Observation” (José Nuno Câmara Pereira), “Color” (Eduardo Nery), “Atelier” (Eduardo Trigo de Sousa with Gastão Cunha, Rodrigo Rau and Henrique Manuel) and “Aesthetics 2” (Salette Tavares). In 1974/75 Eduardo Nery will be teaching “Color” again, Eduardo Trigo de Sousa is responsible for “Introduction to Graphic Communication”, Manuel Rio de Carvalho teaches “Critical history of Art I” and Pedro Vieira de Almeida “Theory and Crticism – a Framework”. The Course will end in June of 1975. The Basic Studies Program that emerges, with the same name, in 1977/78, has very different objectives already. It aims for a public constituted by high school students or students in transit, whishing to pursue their higher education studies in the official Fine Arts schools.
