Arts Collection
Art originals and multiples offered to Ar.Co by their authors take up space and accumulate over time (partly because not all of them were sold in previous benefit sales). These facts cause the Board of Directors to conceive, in the early 1990’s, of an Arts Collection entirely made up of selected works offered to the school by the artists themselves. Already in the first round of negotiations Ar.Co does not approach only the “house artists”, connected to the school’s history by formal ties, but any artist that stands out for doing interesting work. The outcome immediately surpasses all expectations, and the collection soon acquires volume and reach, justifying the request for the status of “cultural interest” that Ar.Co addresses to the Ministry of Culture in 1995. In 2004, a protocol is signed with the Instituto Português dos Museus, setting up a renewable ten year loan of the fine arts section at MNAC-Museu do Chiado. In the following year, a similar agreement places the collection’s ceramics in the Museu Nacional do Azulejo. Some of these works will eventually integrate exhibitions, organized by these museums or other entities. The first public exhibition of the Arts Collection organized by Ar.Co takes place in 2008, as part of the commemorations of the school’s 35th anniversary, and presents a wide selection of works under the title “’Quel Air Clair...’ / Obras da Colecção do Ar.Co” (’Quel Air Clair...’ / works from Ar.Co’s collection”). A second official exhibition, in 2012, is limited to a selection of the fine arts section, although including a significant amount of new entries. The show is called “Shoreline” and takes place, simultaneously, at the Centro de Artes de Sines (CAS) and at the Centro Cultural Emmerico Nunes, also in Sines. Today, the collection includes 700 works in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, photography, ceramics, jewellery, installations, illustration and video/film.
